Holy Ghost Catholic Primary School

Sport at Holy Ghost

Sport is an integral part of the children's education at Holy Ghost Primary School.

Vision

At Holy Ghost Catholic Primary School, we aim to deliver a PE curriculum that provides pupils with the skills, knowledge, and opportunities to develop a lifelong passion for physical activity, sport, and healthy living. Our programme fosters a positive attitude towards physical activity and ensures every child is equipped to lead a physically active lifestyle. We strive to create an environment where physical education supports personal growth, teamwork, and resilience, preparing pupils to succeed in all aspects of life.

Intent

Our PE curriculum is designed to achieve personal growth by:

  • Fostering virtues that enable children to develop high aspirations, healthy self-confidence, and self-esteem.
  • Encouraging a thirst for learning, highlighting its lifelong value.
  • Promoting the ability to evaluate options wisely and make decisions that reflect respect and excellence.
  • Valuing interpersonal relationships that celebrate achievements, mutual respect, and the contributions of every individual regardless of age, gender, race, or ability.
  • Motivating children to actively participate in their communities and understand their roles within them.

Implementation

Our PE curriculum is inclusive, progressive, and engaging, ensuring that:

  • Pupils receive two hours of high-quality PE instruction per week, delivered by specialist teachers and trained staff.
  • Lessons are structured to build on prior knowledge, incorporating skill development, strategic thinking, and gameplay.
  • A wide range of activities, including gymnastics, invasion games, athletics, dance, and swimming, are provided to cater to diverse interests and abilities.
  • Cross-curricular links are used to enhance learning, such as integrating mathematics into athletics
  • Pupils have access to extracurricular clubs and competitive opportunities to apply their skills in various settings.

The role of our sports leaders is pivotal in promoting a culture of physical activity and teamwork. By leading warm-ups, assisting in organising events, and serving as role models, they help inspire their peers to engage enthusiastically in physical education.

Impact

The impact of our PE curriculum is evident in:

  • Improved physical literacy and fundamental movement skills across all year groups.
  • Increased participation in physical activity during lessons, breaks, and extracurricular clubs.
  • Positive attitudes towards health and fitness, fostering lifelong habits.
  • Development of key life skills such as communication, leadership, and resilience.
  • Success in local and regional sporting competitions, showcasing pupils' skills and teamwork.
  • Enhanced well-being and self-esteem, as children feel valued and accomplished in their physical achievements.

This table below outlines the key developmental milestones in physical education for each year group, focusing on three essential areas: Cognitive, Physical and Personal, Social, and Emotional. Together, these areas support the holistic development of pupils, promoting physical competence, emotional well-being, and a positive approach to lifelong physical activity.
